Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare — Complete Guide for Marlow Clients

Correct aftercare is the single most controllable factor in SMP longevity. The critical window is Days 1–30 post-session. Most aftercare failures occur in the first week — from clients washing too early, using incorrect products, or exposing the treated scalp to UV before healing is complete.

Long-Term Maintenance: Extending SMP Longevity

Daily SPF 30+ on the scalp is the single most effective maintenance action. UV exposure via photo-oxidation is the primary mechanism by which carbon-based SMP pigment fades. Men who apply SPF consistently can extend results by 1–2 years. Additional longevity tips:

  • Regular scalp moisturising maintains skin health and pigment base
  • Avoid strong chemical exfoliants (glycolic acid, salicylic acid) applied directly to the scalp
  • Annual check with your practitioner from Year 3 onward to assess density
  • A minor crown and hairline top-up at Year 4–5 can push full refresh need to Year 8+
A single accidental early wash is unlikely to cause significant damage, particularly after Day 3. The greatest risk is Days 0–2, when deposits are most superficial and vulnerable. If early washing occurs, pat dry immediately — do not rub — and apply gentle unscented moisturiser. Contact your practitioner if substantial pigment disruption is visible.
Loose-fitting, clean, breathable cotton hats can be worn from Day 1 for UV protection outdoors. Avoid tight-fitting caps that trap heat and moisture against the scalp in the first 7 days. After Day 14, normal hat and helmet use can resume.
Daily SPF on the scalp is strongly recommended as a permanent habit for SMP longevity. A quick application each morning adds under 30 seconds to a routine and can extend results by 1–2 years. This is particularly relevant for men in outdoor professions or those who spend significant time outdoors.
